    Dell Mini 9 Netbook Unboxing

Well, this was waiting for me when I came home!

First impressions are of a solid, well made, light netbook with a very good, albeit glossy, screen.

Going to give it a good workout over the weekend.

Can you show what the screen looks like outside?
Maybe in the shade on a sunny day.
    thanks

When (if) it gets sunny I'll try! Screen is very bright indoors, I would say a even a bit brighter than my Fujitsu P1610.

Gavin, can you give us a look at the underside of the Dell, open the peripheral port and show where the SSD card goes, the Memory slot, and if it has the WWAN port and additional antennae for the WWAN?

Also, can you show behind the battery to see if they still included the 3G slot? If so, we should be able to upgrade this thing to WWAN *extremely* easily!

What does the keyboard feel like? Is it firm with little key travel?

    Sep 13, 2008 at 9:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterJim

Gavin, good to see an unboxing vid from north of the border.

I'll second Kenji's WWAN questions. I hear this netbook will be available with a WWAN minicard but Dell couldn't give a time frame. Can you have a look and see if the MINIcard slots are there? There should be two - one filled by the wifi card if the documentation link below if correct.

Could you please show a video of you typing on it?

The most important thing to me (and a lot of folks I think) is that they be able to touch type with it. Astoundingly none of the reviews has yet shown someone typing on it. If you would, please show typing in a wordprocessor format. Thanks!!!

you could make a cup of tea in the time it takes to boot into |XP - awful

Can you show a true boot into Windows once you have the initial setup done?

    Sep 13, 2008 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterStryker412

    OK, here goes!

The 3G sim slot is there
The keyboard is OK, there is a reasonable amount of key travel although I wouldn't type a novel on it! Touch typing wouldn't be easy I think.
Both mincard slots are there as seen in my other post.
    No built in CD drive(!)
XP boot time is 35 seconds from turn on to use.

More to follow but hope this helps guys.

Gavin how would you say screen brightness compares to LED brightness or even good standard laptop bright technologies?

Nice! Thanks for the video :)

I wonder when will this netbook comes to my country

    Sep 14, 2008 at 2:44 AM | Unregistered Commentergagahput3ra

Hey, I was wondering are you filming this with a digital camera or camcorder?

    Sep 14, 2008 at 3:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterGreenerist

    @pt

Why don't you read instead of posting stupid bloody questions? XP only takes a long time to boot the very first time it's run. Post 12 tells you the actual boot is 35 seconds. Very acceptable.

will you have a chance to test out a 2G RAM in this machine? me still waiting for its arrival to my country.

    Sep 14, 2008 at 5:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterAlex

    Is there built-in microphone?

    Sep 14, 2008 at 6:45 AM | Unregistered CommenterDENgerous

    DENgerous:
Yes there is a built in mic, on the bottom?!?! per the service manual (and the "Setup Guide" item 4) that I downloaded from the Dell site.

I just ordered mine today, and was searching the net for something like this, and here it is, perfect!

    Thanks for all the info!!!

My estimated ship date is September 29 to Washington State, US (16GB SSD, 1GB RAM, Internal Bluetooth, Obsidian Black, XP).

Mr. Gavin, compared to the other netbooks with the same mini 9 specifications that you have used or reviewed before, how good is the mini 9 so far? Who tops the performance? And how long did it take for you to receive the netbook starting from the day you purchased it until the day it was delivered on your door.
